Favor for a favor

I don't really get the whole concept of wedding favors. I mean, I enjoy eating Hershey Kisses off the table as much as the next wedding guest but ultimately, what's the point?

But with a destination wedding, I feel we have to provide some sort of welcome bag. Some ideas so far have included playing cards, luggage tags, sunblock.

As I mentioned in the last post, I really like taking photos, so I was thinking a beach-themed frame with a photo of the guest in it (as I've likely taken a photo of nearly every attending guest at some point over the years, or can get one). But then IC said "why would they want a photo of themselves?" and I guess he has a point. But they definitely don't need a little photo of us so that just about concludes any thoughts I had for incorporating pictures into the gift bag.

Thoughts? Ideas?

UPDATE: The other thing I really like, in life, is music so I've considered making a mix cd of music that will be played at our wedding. But A)people will likely have a lot of the songs already and B)those that don't have the songs probably aren't into them to begin with. But maybe a mix cd.

  1. Make the bag something to keep, too. I went to a destination wedding last year, and the bag itself is the thing I still use the most. It's a reusable grocery bag, but a totally cute one. I definitely used up the lip balm that was in the bag, too. A map of the island would be useful.

  5. I think the other comments are onto something. A reusable tote or small duffel bag stuffed with some travel niceties like munchies, sunscreen, whatever, would make a nice welcome gift and would be useful. It probably won't be that expensive either. I know if I got something like that, I'd be a happy camper.

  7. I like the picture idea, actually. Could you spend an hour or two getting candids of couples/small groups once you get there? And then have them printed somewhere locally, so they'd have them before they went home?

That sounds like a lot of trouble, now that I write it all out...

  8. Something else that was in our bag was a souvenir from the place we were in, but a useful one (a change purse). Pre-postaged postcards from the island might be nice; I know I'd write them and send them if I got those.

  9. Was thinking disposable polaroids /cameras; you can recruit the guests to help you capture the many moments there are sure to be....but then I thought how primitive in the age of digital photography...hmmmm so not sure

  10. Oh I like Caryns idea. How about a turtle bag with lip salve/map?
We had crystal healing stones and local to me whisky minitures at the meal for the men. It's a little thing that's personal to you.
We did the polaroid cameras..that is fun, I so recommend that!! We had some really funny ones!! xx

  11. A welcome bag with a book (maybe something related to the island), some refreshments (not sure about your destination), beach stuff and some snacks would be perfect. Playing off Laura's idea how about underwater disposables.

I did a wedding on Nantucket and they had a basket of local stuff and a tour guide it was great!

How about some chips from the casino? Few thousand should hold me for at least the 1st few hours. Thanks.

  12. I just came back from a destination wedding in Jamaica and got a great wedding favors. It was a beach tote with my name on it and it included a frame, sublock, lipbalm, body stuff...and all this other cute stuff that you can use on the beach. I thought it was a very thoughful and reusable gift. I like the whole idea of a reusable grocery bag too (if you can find a cute one)....going green is an awesome idea! =)

  13. We did a mix CD - it's not just the songs - I'm sure plenty of people have most of them and maybe couldn't give a rip about the rest - we did liner notes as well that talked about what each song meant to us and why we chose it. I don't think the main goal of a wedding favor is being useful as much as it is a need reminder of the day, so a CD that tells people something about the folks getting married is a good favor.

  15. My co-worker runs a web-based business that specializes in CUSTOM EMBROIDERY DESIGNS on TOTE BAGS for everyday use and for special occasions.
Her prices seem pretty reasonable, and I am sure if you're ordering in bulk she can work with you on the price as well, plus, I know her.
I think it's a cute idea, you can put anything you want in the bag as well as on the bag :)
